The Ultimate Guide: How to Travel to Bimini and Where to Stay

Bimini, an island in the Bahamas a mere 50 miles off Florida’s coast, offers pristine beaches, world-class diving, and a laid-back island charm not found in the USA. If you’re planning to travel to Bimini for a hammerhead shark dive adventure or simply to enjoy its turquoise waters, this guide will help you navigate the transportation options and accommodation choices for this paradise island.

Getting There: Your Options to Travel to Bimini

When planning your travel to Bimini, you have several transportation methods to consider, each with its own advantages and considerations.

Flying to Fort Lauderdale + Ferry or Seaplane

The Most Reliable Method: The easiest and most dependable way to travel to Bimini is to fly into Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and then take either the ferry or seaplane to the island.

Balearia Caribbean

The ferry service from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini is an excellent option for travelers who:

  • Are looking for more affordable transportation (it’s still relatively expensive)
  • Have substantial luggage (there are no restrictive weight limits)
  • Don’t mind a slightly longer transit time

The Balearia Caribbean ferry departs from the port in Fort Lauderdale (always be sure to confirm departure information) and takes approximately 2 hours to reach Bimini. Although it’s about $300-$350 round trip, it’s the cheapest option to get to Bimini.,

Pro Tip: Book your ferry tickets well in advance, particularly if traveling during weekends or holidays.

Seaplane Service

For those prioritizing speed and experience when they travel to Bimini, the seaplane option offers:

  • A quick 30-minute flight from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini
  • Spectacular aerial views of the Gulf Stream and island
  • A unique adventure that becomes part of your vacation

Tropic Ocean Airways operates regular seaplane service to Bimini, landing directly in the harbor. While considerably more expensive than the ferry (expect to pay $250-350 one-way), the convenience and experience make it worthwhile for many travelers.

Important Consideration: Seaplanes have strict luggage weight restrictions. If you’re traveling with dive gear or substantial luggage, you’ll need to factor in potential excess baggage fees or consider the ferry instead.

Direct Flights to Bimini (FOR NOW)

Silver Airways has offered direct flights to Bimini from Fort Lauderdale in the past. However, travelers should be aware that this service has historically been unreliable, with frequent cancellations and schedule changes. Buyer beware!

Where to Stay When You Travel to Bimini

The island offers two distinct areas for accommodation: Resort World Bimini on the north end and the more traditional “in town” area of Alice Town and Bailey Town. Consider logistics and your desired experience!

If you’re traveling for the hammerhead dive (or scuba in general) Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center is located at Bimini Big Game in Alice Town. Resort World is about 2-2.5 miles from Neal’s.

Resorts World Bimini

This expansive, modern resort complex offers:

  • Upscale hotel accommodations and vacation rentals
  • Multiple restaurants and bars
  • A marina, pool complex, and casino
  • Beach access and water sports

The Resorts World Bimini provides full-service luxury with beautiful rooms overlooking the marina or ocean. The property feels somewhat removed from the authentic Bahamian experience but offers all the amenities you’d expect from a high-end resort.

AGAIN – Important for Divers: While Resorts World offers beautiful accommodations, it’s located approximately 2 miles from Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center at the Bimini Big Game Club. If you’re visiting specifically for diving experiences, you’ll need to arrange transportation to and from the dive shop each day.

“In Town” Options

Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina

This historic property is ideal for diving enthusiasts as it hosts Neal Watson’s dive operation on-site. Benefits include:

  • Immediate access to diving excursions
  • A more authentic Bahamian atmosphere
  • Comfortable rooms and a pool area
  • Walking distance to local restaurants and shops

The Big Game Club combines comfort with convenience for divers while maintaining the island’s traditional character.

Airbnb and Vacation Rentals

Throughout Alice Town and Bailey Town, numerous vacation rentals and Airbnb options provide:

  • More spacious accommodations for families or groups
  • Kitchen facilities for self-catering
  • Often lower per-night costs than hotels
  • Integration into the local community

Getting Around Bimini

Bimini is a small island, but the distance between accommodations, dining options, and activities can make transportation necessary.

Golf Cart Rentals

The preferred method of transportation when you travel to Bimini is renting a golf cart. These vehicles perfectly suit the island’s pace and road conditions. Expect to pay approximately $100 per day for a golf cart rental.

Most hotels can arrange rentals, or you can book directly with several local companies. During peak season (December-April), it’s advisable to reserve your golf cart well in advance as availability becomes limited.

Taxis

Taxis are available on the island but can be limited in number. Many taxi drivers also serve as unofficial tour guides, providing local knowledge and island history during your journey.
