Exploring Angkor: A Two-Day Guide to Cambodia’s Ancient Wonder

Not only is the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Lonely Planet’s #1 site to visit, it is a breathtaking combination of history, jungle, and adventure. With its sprawling ancient temples and lush surroundings, exploring Angkor is an unforgettable experience. I truly felt like Indiana Jones cruising around the park exploring ancient ruins and taking photos. If you’re planning a visit, this two-day guide will help you make the most of your time, blending adventure and in-depth exploration.

Day 1: Exploring Angkor’s Outer Circle by Tuk-Tuk

Start your journey by hiring a tuk-tuk from Siem Reap, the charming town that serves as the gateway to Angkor. Tuk-tuks are a quintessential Cambodian experience, offering both comfort and convenience as you navigate the outer circle of the Angkor Archaeological Park.

I did not have an itinerary when I set out on the tuk tuk, but the driver knew the route. Here are some highlights from the outer circle that you can see when you’re exploring Angkor.

I couldn’t communicate with my guide, so I did not learn much about the history, but I had an epic time wondering around, taking photos, and catching some alone time in the park. If you tip the security guards, they will know the best places to take photos.

Day 2: Sunrise and Angkor’s Iconic Temples with a Guide

To truly appreciate the heart of Angkor, hire a knowledgeable guide for an immersive and educational experience. Cambodia is full of ancient history and recent history, so getting to spend time with a local is an experience not to be missed!

Pre-Dawn: Explorig Angkor Wat at sunrise

Start your second day well before dawn to witness the sunrise at Angkor Wat, the crown jewel of the archaeological park. As the sky transitions from dark to golden hues, the silhouette of the temple reflected in the moat creates a picture-perfect moment.

Morning: The Bayon and Angkor Thom

After sunrise, head to The Bayon, located at the center of Angkor Thom, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire. Known for its enigmatic stone faces, The Bayon is a marvel of both art and engineering. Explore the intricate bas-reliefs that depict scenes of daily life and epic battles.

Stroll through the nearby Terrace of the Elephants and Terrace of the Leper King, grand platforms that once hosted royal ceremonies. These sites provide a glimpse into the grandeur of Angkor Thom.

Afternoon: Ta Prohm, the Jungle Temple

Conclude your exploration with a visit to Ta Prohm, famously known as the “Jungle Temple” thanks to the massive trees and roots that have intertwined with its stone structures. This temple’s wild and overgrown appearance has made it one of Angkor’s most iconic and photogenic sites. Exploring Angkor is sure to be a highlight of any trip to Southeast Asia!

Practical Tips for Exploring Angkor

Passes: Purchase a multi-day pass at the entrance to maximize your time. Options include 1-day, 3-day, and 7-day passes.

Clothing: Wear light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Remember to dress modestly when entering temples.

Water and Snacks: Stay hydrated and carry some snacks, especially during long days of exploring.

Timing: Start early each day to avoid crowds and midday heat. It’s nice to have the time to spend afternoon hanging out at the pool and otherwise relaxing (rather than battling the heat). I stayed at the Hari Residences, and it had a nice rooftop pool!
